Every year, WSB’s 3rd grade heads to Hawthorne Valley Farm for a week-long farm trip. This is has a been a tradition for over 30 years! In fact, Ms. Smith, the 3rd grade’s homeroom teacher, was last here when she was a 3rd grade student at WSB!
On the farm, students work hard and play hard. They’re involved in just about every facet of farm life — from cleaning out the mudroom and washing dishes to mucking out the dairy barn and chopping firewood. Please enjoy the photos below. We’re two days in with two more to go and plenty more to do!
This morning Ms. Smith’s 3rd Grade class visited Roseda Farm in Monkton, MD. Roseda Farm proudly uses sustainable, traditional, small scale practices to raise cattle for meat. The students got to see inside the barn, pet a two-hour-old calf, play with the farm dog, and climb straw-bales (and frozen compost piles). You can purchase Roseda Beef at their farm store (15317 Carroll Road, Monkton, MD 21111). Farm store hours are Tuesday – Friday 10 am. to 6 pm. and Saturday 10 am to 4 pm. In other news, today WSB’s 5th grade worked on labeling the honey jars. Each student designed a label, so you will have a variety of artwork to choose from. We still have a bit more to get done before our honey will hit the market. We’ll be selling 1.5 oz and 3.75 oz jars to raise fund to our honeybees. Pricing and selling will be the next topic of our honey business discussion.

Happy Earth Day!
For over 35 years, the Waldorf School of Baltimore has been sending their 3rd grade class to Hawthorne Valley Farm for a week-long trip that deepens their sense of independence and understanding of life and the food system. This week, Mrs. Jerram’s 3rd grade is in the midst of this life changing experience and is busy working and playing hard from dawn to dusk. Thus far, our students have been engaged in activities ranging from horseback riding to baking sourdough bread…and they still have 2 more full days to go! On Monday our 3rd grade class started their gardening block, and to kick it off properly we went on a field trip to One Straw Farm. Our gracious hosts, Joan & Drew Norman, have been running the organic farm since 1983. Joan took us on a grand tour showing us the land, animals, and farm equipment; and she had us tasting lots of vegetables and berries along the way. She even sent us off with our pockets loaded with peppers, eggplants, tomatoes, and one giant butternut squash each! Below is a slideshow of our day on the farm. Today, I had the pleasure of accompanying Ms. Jerram & WSB’s 3rd grade class on a trip to Hybridoma Organic Fruit Farm. The weather was beautiful, with heavy, sliver-laced storm clouds floating rapidly overhead. The students picked raspberries and apples, climbed some farm equipment, and learned about Mr. Hamilton’s impressive solar array. We left munching on organic apples and got back to school just before the heavy rain began to fall. Mr. Hamilton was kind enough to donated two blueberry plants to our school which we will plant later on this week. You can visit Hybridoma Farm and pick your own organic fruits from Mid-June thru August on Wednesdays & Saturdays. (It’s only about 20 miles north of Baltimore City.
