Spring 2014: GREEN SCHOOL & GREEN POWER!!!

Greetings! Spring us upon us and we are busy, busy, busy! Students have been expanding our school garden as well as planting trees and seeds in our new pop-up greenhouse. Our chickens are healthy and happy, and our honeybees are thriving. We will be harvesting wax and honey within the next couple of weeks.

Another piece of exciting news . . . . In an effort to remain leaders into a sustainable future, The Waldorf School of Baltimore is now offsetting 100% of our yearly energy consumption with renewable energy! This avoids emitting 475,629 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and advances the U.S. green economy and energy independence. Spring 2014: 3rd Grade Farm Trip PART 1

Happy Earth Day!
For over 35 years, the Waldorf School of Baltimore has been sending their 3rd grade class to Hawthorne Valley Farm for a week-long trip that deepens their sense of independence and understanding of life and the food system. This week, Mrs. Jerram’s 3rd grade is in the midst of this life changing experience and is busy working and playing hard from dawn to dusk. Thus far, our students have been engaged in activities ranging from horseback riding to baking sourdough bread…and they still have 2 more full days to go!  Please enjoy the photographs below (and, parents, please know that even though the photos are full of wide eyes and bright smiles, your children miss you…really they do. 🙂 )

Future Bee: A Biodynamic Beekeeping Workshop in Maryland

The following information is for an exciting natural & biodynamic beekeeping workshop happening in Maryland. It’s coordinated by the Chesapeake BioDynamic Network in affiliation with the Biodynamic Farming & Gardening Association. Unfortunately I can not attend all of the workshops, but I will be making a noble attempt to attend some — care to join me?

Join us in learning a reverence for the hive and how we can support healthy, chemical free honey bee colonies.
Dan & Jeri are MD beekeepers & graduates of Gunther Hauk’s “Sustainable Biodynamic Beekeeping Training” at Spikenard Farm. Bill is a long time urban & treatment free beekeeper, owner and steward of Bee Friendly Apiary based in Baltimore, MD.

Down on the Farm: Day 1 & 2

Every year WSB’s 3rd grade class visits Hawthorne Valley Farm in Ghent, NY, for 5 full days of work, play, and more work.
We got here yesterday (Monday 4/22) at around 4:30pm. We went on a farm tour, got ourselves oriented, and had a pleasant supper before Jessie Hughes sang us a few songs before going to bed. Today the work began and I went around and photographed some of the farm and duties which spanned from gardening and horseback riding, to bread & butter making. Below are a few photographs of the journey thus far. Enjoy…

Throwback: Farm Trip 2011

Greetings. Spring is here . . . Today! And as the light and warmth returns, our 3rd Grade Class is gearing up for their annual farm trip to Hawthorne Valley Farm in Upstate New York. We will be leaving on Monday, April 22nd and returning on Saturday, April 27th. For some of our students this will be their first experience away from home and on a farm. The students will participate in a plethora of activities — from cooking & cleaning to wood chopping, animal husbandry & yogurt making. (And I will spend a great deal of time enjoying the food they make and beating them at tether ball.) Before officially working for the school, I volunteered to be a chaperone on the farm trip in 2011. Below are photographs I took on that trip.
